Abstract:
Foods for special medical purposes (FSMP) are intended for feeding infants with special medical and nutritional needs, either exclusively or partially. These products should only be used with medical advice and under medical supervision. Marketing of these products by companies and selling them over the counter without medical advice and supervision is not guaranteed. Due to a lack of evidence, the use of special nutrient solutions for the first days of life in addition to breastfeeding is not recommended for healthy new-borns. The same is true for special foods for infants with colic and/or constipation. The use of infant formulas based on soy protein is not recommended. Moreover, marketing of these formulas should follow the legal restrictions of general infant formulas in order to protect breastfeeding. Homemade and industrially thickened formulas, so called anti-reflux formulas, can be considered in severe cases of regurgitation without other symptoms. These products are not recommended for therapeutic use for gastro-oesophageal reflux or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. For non-breastfed infants, the use of energy- and nutrient-dense infant formulas can be considered under specific conditions.
