Abstract:
An overview of botulinum toxin and the treatment of dystonia is presented. Literature search and personal empirical experiences. Botulinum toxin is one of the strongest toxins that affects the neuromuscular junctions. At low doses its effects can be harnessed for treatment such as in ophthalmology for blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm. Other ophthalmological indications for which it can be used are also discussed. Dystonia are complex functional disorders that cause visual and general impairment leading to a reduced quality of life. On the other hand psychological disorders can increase spasm, heightening the level of suffering. Complementary methods such as relaxation exercises and acupuncture can tackle these problems. These methods have lower efficacy than botulinum toxin, but support mental health. While botulinum toxin is an effective treatment for facial dystonia, complementary methods offer support for psychological conditions, which have received little attention to date.
