Changes in ionized Mg and blood gases in smokers by moderate excitement - a staff health survey

Abstract:
Out of similar to 100 mu L of capillary blood of both smokers and non-smokers of a staff occupied with moderate physical demands, ionized magnesium, pH, pCO(2), and O-2 saturation have been analyzed before and after a 5 minute's concentration test (Shapiro test). The average group values - with the exception of significantly increased pH values - did not show any significant changes, ionized Mg rather tended to increase. Correlative analyses however did show a significantly mounting Mg decrease along with the amount of cigarettes smoked per day and a significant, age dependent mounting decrease in Mg, but only in smokers. Also challenge induced overcompensation was absent in smokers, which however did not prevent oxygen saturation in blood to increase in spite of a comparative lowering of pH. Smoking seems to lead to metabolic overreaction to mental challenges which increase with age and for which changes of ionized Mg seem to be an unambiguous indicator.
