- Abstract:
- Salzmann (1862-1954) was definitely one of the most important ophthalmologists, whose merits are still lasting in our time. One hundred fifty years after his birthday we remember his work: author of the standard textbook "Anatomy and Histology of the Human Eyeball in the Normal State" and father of the gonioscopy. The papillary conus as well as a corneal dystrophy were named after him. As a blessed painter he illustrated several textbooks and his own publications. Famous are his detailed and very informative paintings of the chamber angle. Ironically, Salzmann suffered from age related macular degeneration a few years after retirement.
