Abstract:
We present the case of a newborn with severe head trauma after a car accident and posttraumatic hypopituitarism. Five days after the accident, initial alterations in circulating hormone levels manifested as the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) with severe hyponatremia. This was followed by polyuria with hypernatremic dehydration. Further alterations were secondary hypothyroidism and hypocortisolism as well as hyperprolactinemia. Treatment consisted of desmopressin, L-thyroxine, and hydrocortisone. Within 10 months, we observed the gradual recovery of pituitary gland function.
