Abstract:
BACKGROUND: The assurance of medical quality in health care has become a central demand. The Austrian Ophthalmological Society has therefore instructed their Retina Commission to set up a working group to develop an Austria-wide quality assurance project in the field of vitreoretinal surgery. The aim of this project is the data collection and analysis of the quality assurance relevant parameters of as many Austrian-wide centers as possible and the presentation of quality standards and trends. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two one-sided questionnaires were developed. The first questionaire will be completed at the time of surgery and the second one between 6 and 12 months postoperatively. The anonymized questionnaires will be sent to the study center RESULTS: The datas of the annual evaluation 2010 will be statistically evaluated and published at the annual meeting of the Austrian Ophthalmological Society 2011. CONCLUSIONS: The quality assurance project fulfills a key requirement for operating ophthalmologists. Continuous quality control is also a part of all quality management systems according to whether ISO, EFQM, KTQ or others. It provides an overview of trends in vitreoretinal surgery in Austria and in the course of trend developement. It offers the participating centers the possibility to compare their results with the sum total of all centers. As the project was developed by ophthalmologists of the Austrian Ophthalmological Society, the effectiveness and efficiency is ensured much better than with a mesure that was imposed from outside.
