ACDI; The Austrian Communicative Development Inventories (Levels I and II)

Abstract
Parental report forms provide a clear view of developmental changes in language acquisition from the first words to some 3 years of age, establishing the boundaries of variation within and across levels of development. The Austrian Communicative Development Inventories (ACDI) focus on language and communication skills in young children. The adaptation into Austrian-German was permitted by the CDI-advisory-board. The Austrian-CDI-1 form (688 lexical items) refers to the receptive and expressive vocabulary, and is used until 18 months. The Austrian-CDI-2, used until 3 years of age, is a more comprehensive report on the expressive vocabulary and the acquisition of grammar.
One aim of this project is the standardization of the ACDI forms for children between 12 and 30 months acquiring Austrian-German. The second aim is to investigate the correlation between parental reports (Austrian-CDI) and direct observation on lexical development, as well as the extent to which these two methods could predict language abilities at preschool and school age. Furthermore, of (clinical and scientific) interest are toddlers with a delayed onset of vocabulary production (late talkers) as well as linguistically precocious toddlers (early talkers). Another topic is a multi centre study (European Network on CDIs; Eriksson et al.) on gender differences in language development.
